Mental Health is a Business Issue
In the coming decade, companies that prioritise workers’ wellbeing will be ahead of their competition. Some firms are already making a start.
Multiple studies show that workplace wellbeing leads to improved productivity, higher employee retention, and better teamwork and leadership outcomes.
Managers and CEOs want their teams to work to their full potential—and putting mental health first is a big part of achieving this. Instead of asking employees to work overtime, the brains behind the videogame Minecraft decided to focus on their team’s mental health during the pandemic. It meant that its game update couldn’t be rolled out as quickly. But the quality was unmatched when it finally launched. Players were sending “rave reviews” to the studio. (Source: Forbes)
Fostering a safe and empowering work environment also means drawing in the best talent. 81% of workers believe that mental health support at their workplace is an “important consideration” when looking for job opportunities. (Source: APA)
It means keeping the best talent too. Renowned Canadian physician Gabor Maté shared with me that high-achievers’ drive often stems from a form of childhood trauma. Their performance is linked to the recognition or love they think they deserve. In later life, these people produce amazing work, but are prone to burnout. Compassionate corporate leaders who are able to nurture workplace wellbeing are more likely to retain the most talented employees.
